According to a recently released survey investigating doctor pay, family physicians saw their average annual salaries grow by $17,000 to $175,000 in 2012. However, while that growth is certainly robust, family physicians made less than the highest paid medical professionals, like plastic surgeons, dermatologists, urologists, and radiologists. The disparity in pay between various specialties may explain the ongoing shortage of primary care doctors. According to a report published by the United States Senate, the country needs thousands more family physicians to meet the health care demands of the population. Medscape publishes its Physician Compensation Report annually. For 2012, its report incorporated responses from more than 20,000 American doctors.
